Information

A region of fine wines, great gourmet delights, rolling hills, scenic sounds, waterways and lavender. Journey west from Blenheim along the state highway 63 to ‘the village’ of Wairau valley to ‘Leighvander Cottage’, a working lavender farm is nestled in this snug picturesque township of around 150 people.

History

InformationLeighvander growers Elsie & Brian Hall stumbled upon lavender quite by accident. It all started twelve years ago when Elsie started to create an area at the back door to provide ‘something beautiful the look at’. That somewhat understated comment has brought about what is known as ‘the patch’, a collection and plantings of around 140 varieties.

Gardens

The patch has grown somewhat over the years, has ambling pathways, is framed with roses and small weeping trees providing an aromatic walk with many sitting spots.

The magnificent Richmond Mountain range, which frames the property, provides many changing hues and moods to the lavender garden. The pathway to the collection is reached by walking through the cottage gardens of yester year that surround the delightful restored cob cottage of 1859 that the Hall family live in.

The garden studio boasts a treasure trove of unique rejuvenating natural therapeutic products all under the Leighvander label. Elsie and Brian gain immense satisfaction from producing a well researched product, using their own essential oil, reviving old herbal lore and providing an alternative to harsh chemicals.

Awards

Leighvander lavender oil had won six awards in the New Zealand Supreme Oil Awards compitition held annually over the past three years. Leighvander Cottage holds the award for the highest scoring oil winning New Zealands only Gold award for the current 2006-2007 season. The oil is for sale in 10-100 ml amounts.
